From a main power source, an appliance can work if a power cord can conduct electricity to it. These power supply cords are very flexible and they have electrical plugs on its two ends. The two plugs on both ends is one male and one female plug. What connects both ends is the cable assembly which is made up of copper stands covered with insulating material such as a rubber jacket or a polymer. Electricity is conducted through the copper strands so that it can power up the appliance or electrical equipment.

When power cord manufacturers make power cords, it will have to depend on what region or country they are making it for since there are differences when it comes to voltage standards and electrical receptacle configurations in different regions and countries. Voltage and receptacles from different locations are not the same and this is why these power cords are not interchangeable. There are differences with American and international standards.
When selecting the type of power cord, you need for specific applications you need to consider many factors. There are specifications followed by manufacturers of power cords and these include current rating, voltage rating, safety, jacket material, wire shape and size , length and maximum cable temperature. It is the application that determines that jacket materials that best suits the cords. Rubber, polychloroprene, thermoformed from PVC, and textile construction are the jackets used for power cords. The power supply cord or the electrical wire needed should be able to bear the amount of voltage that will pas through it; and this determine its proper size.
